Re: Europe 72+++++++++++++++ |
Mannnnnnn. This bums me out. The greatest tour of the 20th century will soon be gone from this site! At least I've got all the shows.
I can only pray they'll offer individuals on downloadable mp3, eventually.
Maybe this won't actually happen. I mean come on, it'll be close to $500 with tax. Who's got a half grand to spare on something like this? I need food! Keep in mind that a good portion of that hunk of cash is going toward worthless (read: fake) memorabilia (pictures of tickets, stuffed teddy bears, etc.). It's an interesting idea but ultimately a stupid one. It'll be a sad day if 3000 people actually buy it and it goes into production.

Re: Europe 72+++++++++++++++ |
It will sell. There's enough people making money for nothing and have plenty to burn. I think thats the reason things are getting ridiculously expensive these days, too much disposable income easily attained. When you overcharge your brother then you have enough money be ripped off by the next guy and so on.
Seriously though, how much do you think this peice of cardboard and plastic will cost to make? My guess is less than 20 bucks a unit. After paying off all the people involved for their years of "hard work" getting this stuff released there will still be a hell of a profit even after limiting the release to 7200 units.
Thinking about it now though, I think I remember paying close to $300 for the Golden Roads Box ten years ago and that only had ten discs. So I guess $450 for 60 discs is a BARGAIN!

Re: Europe 72+++++++++++++++ |
Yikes--not to be a downer for ya, but how'd ya pay ~ $300 for GRd? I bought mine at a standard book store, new, for just over $100...wasn't a return. What's the "official price" at the DEAD store, or is it out of print, so to speak? Is that what happened to you? For that one, I fig' it was each orig album, plus extras, and given a standard album CD was ~$15 at the time, what I paid was "normal" for just replacing all my 65-73 albums with CDs.
But, I'd argue that GRd is a much better "deal" than this; this would be akin to adding Feb and Apr shows to the Fillmore Box (ie, 60 CDs of all shows for a two month period in spring of 69 or some such).
I know YOU ALL love Eur 72, but there's no way, even when I was listening full time, that I'd pay that much for disk after disk of the "same show" (think of how much you actually listen to the Fillmore Box, + Feb and Apr shows of 69...it does get redundant, and that's coming from the most limited, redundant one among all of us...
I still can't believe that Fillmore boxes go for so much on ebay or wherever...

Re: Europe 72+++++++++++++++ |
No that's right I misremembered.
You're also right about the fillmore box. I rarely listen to it anymore but am very glad I have it.
I guess I wouldn't be so bitter today if I had an extra 500 bucks and hadnt just been laid off on saturday.
I really want this set. I'm sure I'll find a way to get it. The limited edition thing worries me though.
Im a sucker for the packaging especially since I have almost all the other box sets and am ocd about collecting them all. Besides that though, does anyone think there will be uncirculated material from the tour along with all the remastering? Arent there a few shows that are missing parts or otherwise uncirculated sources?

Re: Europe 72+++++++++++++++ |
Generally, manufacturing cost to retail is minimally a quotient of x 5, except for white powders, Chinese made crap that can go out to infinity, or Mitsubishi wharehoused Japanese Blue Fin Tuna.
Where exactly is the Rhino product manufactured?.
I'd put a number on the discs @ $1.00 ea, packaging @ $.50 ea, the book @ $10.00, therefore cost = $100.

You're probably right that I lowballed the cost a bit but $1 a disc? I gotta sell that.
